What Is a Social Media MCP Server? (2026 Guide)
MCP lets an AI app like Claude post for you. What a social media MCP server does, which schedulers offer one, and how to connect ours.

Short answer: MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, "an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems". A social media MCP server is one that gives an AI app such as Claude a set of posting tools: list your accounts, upload media, check a post, publish it or schedule it. You add the server to your AI app, sign in once, and then ask for a post in plain words. Status 200 Uploads runs one at https://mcp.status200uploads.com/mcp, included in every paid plan from Beginner. Buffer, Publer and Hootsuite also list MCP on their own pages, with different limits.
Key Takeaways
| Point | Details |
|---|---|
| What MCP stands for | Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI apps to outside tools and data |
| What a social media MCP server does | Gives the AI app tools to read your accounts, import media, publish, schedule and check posts |
| Who decides | The specification's safety principles say hosts must get "explicit user consent before invoking any tool" |
| Our server | 17 tools for apps that sign in, on every paid plan from Beginner ($9 a month) |
| Tested apps (ours) | Claude on the web, Desktop and iPhone, and Claude Code |
| Not for n8n | n8n and your own scripts use the REST API, which is on every plan |
What MCP stands for, and how it works
The official site puts it simply: "Think of MCP like a USB-C port for AI applications." One standard plug, many tools.
The specification (latest version 2026-07-28) names three parts. Hosts are "LLM applications that initiate connections", such as Claude. Clients are "Connectors within the host application". Servers are "Services that provide context and capabilities". They talk in JSON-RPC 2.0 messages.
A server can offer three kinds of things. For social media, tools are the part that matters:
| Feature | What the spec says it is |
|---|---|
| Resources | "Context and data, for the user or the AI model to use" |
| Prompts | "Templated messages and workflows for users" |
| Tools | "Functions for the AI model to execute" |
So a social media MCP server is simply a server whose tools post, schedule and report on social media.
What a social media MCP server can do
Here is what ours offers an app that signs in, grouped the way our MCP server page lists them:
| Group | What the AI app can do | Tools |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts | See your profiles and networks, your plan and what is left of it, and what each network allows | status200_list_accounts, status200_get_usage, status200_get_posting_options |
| Media | Find a file in your media library, upload one, or import one from a URL | status200_list_media, status200_create_upload_link, status200_finish_upload, status200_upload_media_from_url, status200_get_media_status |
| Publishing | Check a post without sending it, publish to up to ten places in one call, send a failed post again | status200_validate_post, status200_publish_post, status200_retry_post |
| Scheduling | Put a post on the calendar, change it, or cancel it before it goes out | status200_schedule_post, status200_update_scheduled_post, status200_cancel_scheduled_post |
| History | What happened to a post, your post history, and the numbers each post earned | status200_get_post, status200_list_posts, status200_get_post_performance |
Some choices stay with you. TikTok needs a privacy level and YouTube a privacy status, and "the app has to ask you, it cannot choose for you".
Which schedulers offer an MCP server?
Each line below is from the vendor's own page, checked on 30 October 2026:
| Tool | What its page says | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Status 200 Uploads | Hosted MCP server; the app can publish or schedule to the networks you connected | Every paid plan, from Beginner ($9 a month) |
| Buffer | "Posts created through your AI assistant land in your Buffer queue as drafts or scheduled posts." | "MCP access is included on every plan, including Free." |
| Publer | "Connect AI assistants to Publer to create & schedule content, manage your posts, and access analytics insights through MCP." | Business plan: "Access to Publer API & MCP" |
| Hootsuite | Its plan comparison lists "Wisdom AI In-app assistant and MCP connectors" | Not stated per plan on that row |
Sources: Buffer MCP, Publer plans, Hootsuite plans and our pricing.
To be clear about the difference: Buffer includes MCP on its Free plan, and ours needs a paid plan. On our Free plan you post from the dashboard or through the REST API. Which one is "best" depends on whether you want the AI app to post directly (ours) or to fill a queue you approve (Buffer's description).
Is it safe to let an AI app post for you?
The protocol puts the user in charge. The specification's safety principles say "Hosts must obtain explicit user consent before invoking any tool", and warns that "Tools represent arbitrary code execution and must be treated with appropriate caution."
On our server you choose what the app may do when you sign in: allow "See your account" alone, or also "Post and schedule for you". You also choose how long the connection lasts: 30, 60 or 90 days, or until you disconnect. Every connected app is listed in the dashboard under API, where you can disconnect it.
Two limits to know before you start. Posts are public straight away, and we can't delete a post from a network once it is out; a scheduled post can be cancelled before it goes out. And there is one target per network in a call, with at most 10 targets in all.
Example: connect Claude and post a video
- In Claude, add a custom connector with the address
https://mcp.status200uploads.com/mcp. No key is needed: the app signs in. - Sign in to Status 200 Uploads and allow "Post and schedule for you".
- Ask in plain words, for example: Post the video at this Google Drive link to Instagram and TikTok with the caption "Behind the scenes".
Claude imports the file with status200_upload_media_from_url, then publishes it with status200_publish_post, one target per network. If you didn't say which TikTok privacy level to use, it asks you. The full Instagram walkthrough is in Can Claude post to Instagram?.
An app that can't sign in can use the same server with an API key from a paid plan, and gets a smaller set of 5 tools:
{
"mcpServers": {
"status200-uploads": {
"url": "https://mcp.status200uploads.com/mcp",
"headers": {
"Authorization": "Bearer rl_your_api_key"
}
}
}
}
To resend a publish safely, send an idempotency_key: "for 24 hours the same key gets the first answer back, never a second post."
MCP, REST API or n8n?
Use MCP when you want to ask an AI app for posts in plain words. Use the REST API or n8n when a workflow should post on its own. Our page says it directly: "n8n and your own scripts use the REST API, which is on every plan, Free included. The MCP server is for AI apps." Our n8n guide shows that setup, and pricing lists what each plan includes.
FAQ
What does MCP stand for? Model Context Protocol. The official site calls it "an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems".
Is a social media MCP server free? It depends on the tool. Buffer says "MCP access is included on every plan, including Free." Ours is included in every paid plan, from Beginner at $9 a month. Publer lists MCP on its Business plan.
Which AI apps work with the Status 200 Uploads MCP server? Claude on the web, in Claude Desktop and on iPhone, and Claude Code have signed in and used the tools. Cursor's sign-in worked on 9 October 2026, but its tools are not tested yet. ChatGPT is recognised but not tested yet.
Can the AI app delete my posts? No. We can't delete a post from a network once it is out, and no tool does. The app can cancel a scheduled post before it goes out.
Do I need an API key?
No, if the app signs in. An app that can't sign in can send the rl_ key of an account on a paid plan instead, and gets 5 tools.
