Threads Gems: What They Reward and What to Post (2026)

Threads is testing Gems, a daily mark for standout posts and replies. Who's eligible, how they're picked, and why a crosspost can't win one.

Threads Gems: What They Reward and What to Post (2026)

Short answer: Threads Gems are a daily mark that Threads gives to public posts and replies that start or continue a standout conversation. Threads says they're chosen by automated systems once a day, based on the conversation a post creates and not on follower count (Instagram Help Center). Three things are judged: perspective, discussion and originality. Right now only posts and replies from people in the US can get a Gem, and a post that was crossposted from another app can't. So write for Threads on Threads, say something only you would say, and reply directly to people.

Key Takeaways

Point Details
What it is A Gem is a mark on a post or reply that Threads picks as part of a standout conversation
How often Threads uses automated systems to choose Gems once a day
Who can get one For now, only people in the US; Gems are visible to everyone on Threads
Judged on Perspective, discussion and originality, not follower count
What can't win Reposts, crossposts from another app, deleted or hidden posts, replies to replies
If you don't get one Threads says it doesn't affect your profile or how many people see your posts
What to do Post Threads-native text, ask something people want to answer, reply directly

What are Threads Gems?

In early October 2026 Threads announced a way to recognize posts and replies "that drive meaningful conversations" (Social Media Today, 8 Oct 2026). The Verge reported it as a test (The Verge, 9 Oct 2026). Threads' own help page states the goal plainly: "Each day, we highlight some of the standout conversations on Threads. We give Gems to public posts and replies that started or continued these conversations" (Instagram Help Center).

If your post or reply gets one, "you'll be notified and see the option to share a special post about it," according to Threads' announcement as quoted by Social Media Today.

Two limits are worth knowing before you plan anything around it:

  • It's US-only for now. The help page says "only posts and replies from people in the US can get Gems," though people in other countries "may still see Gems on Threads."
  • Most posts won't get one. "Most posts and replies don't get Gems. If you don't get a Gem, this doesn't affect your profile or change how many people see your posts and replies on Threads."

So a Gem is a mark of recognition. It isn't a reach penalty if you miss out. Treat it as a reason to post better, not as something to chase.

Which posts and replies are eligible?

Threads lists the conditions on its help page:

Rule What Threads says
Created on Threads Must be visible, not deleted or hidden. "It can't be a repost or crossposted from another app"
Direct replies only A reply must be "a direct reply to a post (not a reply to a reply)"
Public profile, 18 or older "The profile must belong to someone 18 or older"
Policy-compliant Must follow Community Standards and be appropriate for all users on Threads

Meta's own example for the crosspost rule is: "if you create a post on Instagram and crosspost it to Threads, it can't get a Gem" (Instagram Help Center). The page doesn't say how a post sent through a scheduling tool is treated, so we can't tell you whether it counts. If a Gem matters to you, play it safe and post the Threads version as its own post (more on that below).

How are Gems chosen?

Threads says the selection is automated and based on the conversation, not the account. Gems "are selected based on" three things (Instagram Help Center):

Criterion Threads' wording
Perspective "Brings a fresh take and unique value to the discussion"
Discussion "Sparks real back-and-forth dialogue that keeps the conversation moving"
Originality "Is your own work, not something recycled from elsewhere online"

It also says Gems are "based on the conversation a post or reply created or continued, not on how many followers a profile has." That's good news for small accounts, and it means a sharp direct reply under someone else's post can qualify just as a post can.

Social Media Today points out the risk of automatic selection: the system could highlight remarks that spark conversation but aren't what Meta wants to promote (Social Media Today). The help page gives the three criteria above and no formula.

What to post: what Threads' criteria suggest

The help page has no posting guide for Gems. What follows is our reading of its three criteria, not a Threads rule.

  1. Lead with a point of view. "Perspective" asks for a fresh take. A claim you'd defend beats a summary of the news.
  2. End on a question people can answer in one line. "Discussion" means back-and-forth, so give people something to reply to, and then reply back.
  3. Write the post for Threads. "Originality" and the crosspost rule both point the same way: not "something recycled from elsewhere online." A caption copied from an Instagram post is what the rule describes.
  4. Reply directly, and add something. Direct replies to a post can get a Gem; replies to replies can't. Under a post that's already getting conversation, a reply with your own angle is a legitimate way in.
  5. Keep it within the limit. Threads text is capped at 500 characters, and our API refuses a longer one (API docs).

The same logic is behind Instagram's rules for reposted content. If you cross-post, read what counts as original in our guide to Instagram's originality rules.

Example: send a Threads-native post and read the results back with our API

Our API sends one post to one network from one profile per request ("Each request goes to one network from one profile" in the API docs). That makes it natural to write a separate Threads version of your idea instead of pasting the same caption everywhere. The REST API is on every plan, the Free plan included (pricing).

1. Check the post without sending it. Add "dryRun": true next to post. Every check a publish makes is run, and nothing is sent. Threads text over 500 characters is refused (API docs).

curl -X POST 'https://status200uploads.com/api/v2/posts' \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -H 'Authorization: Bearer rl_your_api_key' \
  -d '{
    "dryRun": true,
    "post": {
      "accountId": "@myprofile",
      "platform": "threads",
      "content": {
        "text": "Hot take: the best Threads post ends with a question you would actually answer yourself. What is yours?"
      }
    }
  }'

2. Send it, or schedule it. Remove dryRun. Text-only posts are accepted for Threads. Add scheduledFor with a time zone to queue it; a time without a zone is refused. The Idempotency-Key makes a retry after a timeout safe, because for 24 hours you get the first answer back and nothing is posted twice (API docs).

curl -X POST 'https://status200uploads.com/api/v2/posts' \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -H 'Authorization: Bearer rl_your_api_key' \
  -H 'Idempotency-Key: threads-hot-take-2026-10-26' \
  -d '{
    "post": {
      "accountId": "@myprofile",
      "platform": "threads",
      "scheduledFor": "2026-10-26T18:00:00+01:00",
      "content": {
        "text": "Hot take: the best Threads post ends with a question you would actually answer yourself. What is yours?"
      }
    }
  }'

3. Read it back. The answer names the post in status200.status_url. GET /api/v2/posts/{id} returns its status, its link on the network and its figures. Figures are collected every 6 hours during the first 7 days, on the networks that report them. A figure the network didn't report is null and named in not_reported: "null never means zero" (API docs). If you're trying to start conversations, watch the comments figure, as long as Threads reports it for your post.

curl 'https://status200uploads.com/api/v2/posts/YOUR_POST_ID' \
  -H 'Authorization: Bearer rl_your_api_key'

On paid plans from Beginner, Claude, Cursor and other MCP apps can do the same through our hosted MCP server: status200_validate_post checks a post and status200_schedule_post queues it. status200_get_post_performance reads the figures back, and a figure the network didn't report comes back as null, never zero (API docs). For the wider picture on queuing Threads posts, see can you schedule Threads posts?.

Nothing in our API can earn a Gem for you. That depends on what you write and who answers.

FAQ

What is a Threads Gem? A mark Threads gives to public posts and replies that started or continued a standout conversation. Threads chooses them with automated systems once a day.

Who can get a Threads Gem? For now, only posts and replies from people in the US can get Gems. Everyone on Threads can see them. The profile must be public and belong to someone 18 or older.

Can I get a Gem for a post I crossposted from Instagram? No. Threads says a post can't be a repost or crossposted from another app, and gives crossposting an Instagram post to Threads as its example.

Do Gems depend on how many followers I have? No. Threads says Gems are based on the conversation a post or reply created or continued, not on how many followers a profile has.

Does missing out on a Gem hurt my reach? No. Threads says most posts and replies don't get Gems, and that not getting one doesn't affect your profile or how many people see your posts and replies.
