Instagram's Originality Rules for Reposts, Explained (2026)
Since 30 April 2026, accounts that mostly repost photos or carousels lose Instagram recommendations. What counts as original and how to recover.

Short answer: Since 30 April 2026, Instagram applies its originality rules to photos and carousels, not just Reels. Accounts that mostly re-upload other people's work "will no longer be eligible for recommendations," so they stop showing up for people who don't follow them. Your followers still see your posts (Instagram). To stay safe, post work you made or meaningfully changed. Use the built-in Repost button or Stories when you want to share someone else's post. If you've been flagged, you become eligible again once most of your posts from a rolling 30-day period are original.
Key Takeaways
| Point | Details |
|---|---|
| What changed | On 30 April 2026 the Reels originality protections from 2024 were extended to photos and carousels |
| Who is affected | Accounts that primarily re-upload others' work without material edits |
| What you lose | Recommendations to non-followers (Explore, Reels, Feed recommendations, Search, Suggested Accounts) |
| What you keep | Your posts still reach the people who already follow you |
| Not enough to make it yours | A border, a watermark, subtitles, a speed change, or a credit in the caption |
| Safe ways to share | The Repost button, sharing to your Story, collabs and remix |
| How to recover | Most of your recent posts must be original over a rolling 30-day window; check Account Status and appeal if it's a mistake |
What changed on 30 April 2026
Instagram's creator team announced it was "updating how we reward original content." In its words: "The same protections we introduced to reels in 2024 will now apply to photos and carousels. This means content aggregators who primarily re-upload others' work in photos and carousel posts will no longer be eligible for recommendations across Instagram" (Instagram for Creators, 30 Apr 2026).
Two details matter more than the headline:
- It's about the account, not one post. The rule targets accounts that "primarily post unoriginal content." Sharing someone else's work now and then isn't the target. Making it most of what you post is.
- Followers are not affected. Instagram says the update "does not impact how we show people content from accounts they follow."
Instagram also says "75% of recommendations in the US" now come from original posts. That's its own figure, for the US only (Instagram for Creators).
YouTube followed on 1 October 2026 with a Shorts update that reduces the reach of content "re-uploaded from other creators without adding anything of your own" (Social Media Today). If you post to both apps, read our breakdown of YouTube's Shorts originality update.
Where "recommendations" means you lose reach
Instagram's Help Center spells this out: recommended posts appear "in places like Explore, Reels and Feed Recommendations to people who don't already follow you," and an eligible account may also be recommended in "Search or Suggested Accounts" (Instagram Help Center).
It also says: "If your account is not eligible to be recommended, none of your content will be recommended." That includes your original posts. So one account mixing a lot of reposted carousels with good original Reels can lose reach on the Reels too. On the other hand, "even if you're not eligible to be recommended, your content can still show up for your followers."
What Instagram counts as original
Instagram's original content guidelines define original content as "work that you wholly created or reflects your unique perspective," with three examples:
| Counts as original | Instagram's description |
|---|---|
| Photos or videos you took | "your photography and edits are reflective of your creative vision" |
| Content you designed | "a photo series, a how-to guide, or a visual story" you personally created |
| Content you materially edited | edits to third-party content that "meaningfully enhance" it, such as unique on-screen text, creative graphics with new information, or a remix |
And what doesn't count. The 30 April post says re-uploading someone else's work "without adding meaningful creative input to enhance the original, such as just adding a border, watermark, subtitles, or a credit in the captions" doesn't qualify (Instagram for Creators). The guidelines add "speed changes" to the list of low-effort edits. They also say that a screenshot of someone else's work, "even if you credit the original creator," without much else "wouldn't be considered original" (guidelines).
Instagram's own test is the most useful line on the page: "if someone could remove your contribution to your post or reel, and the content would virtually be the same, it probably needs more of you in it."
What about cross-posting your own videos?
Cross-posting a Reel you filmed yourself isn't what the rule targets. By Instagram's definition, "photos or videos you took" are original. Its unoriginal examples are content "that you had no role in creating" and content "you didn't produce or film" without material edits (guidelines). The risk is posting other people's clips, screenshots and photo dumps as if they were yours.
The safe ways to share other people's posts
You can still share. Just use the tools that credit the creator. Instagram's guidelines say: "If you want to curate reels and posts from other accounts to your audience without making material edits, we recommend reposting to your followers or sharing the content to your stories" (guidelines).
| Tool | What it does | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Repost button | Reposts a public reel or post. It shows in a separate Reposts tab on your profile and is credited to the original poster | About Instagram, 6 Aug 2025 |
| Share to Story | Recommended by Instagram for curating others' posts with credit | guidelines |
| Collabs, remix, paid partnership label | Lets you include others' content in posts you helped create, "while ensuring everyone else involved gets credit" | Instagram for Creators |
Two limits on the Repost button, from Instagram's Help Center: "you can only repost reels or posts if the original creator allows reposts of their content." You can switch that on or off for your own posts under Sharing and reuse (Instagram Help Center). Reposts also work in your favor as a creator. Instagram says a reposted post "may be recommended to that person's followers, even if those people don't follow you" (About Instagram).
How to check your account and recover
- Open Account Status. Instagram says: "Go to Account Status in your settings to see if your account has any limits to its reach" (Instagram for Creators). On a professional account, Account Status shows whether your content may be eligible for recommendations. It can also show a sample of the posts that go against the guidelines (Help Center).
- Remove or fix the posts in question, or appeal. Instagram says you "can remove the content in question or appeal our decision."
- Post originals for the next 30 days. Accounts "can become eligible again when most of their recently posted photos, carousels, and reels are considered original in a 30-day period. This is calculated on a rolling basis."
Instagram also notes that the originality rules are separate from its intellectual property policies. Original or not, "you are responsible for obtaining any necessary permissions before using someone else's work."
Example: schedule a Reel with credit built in, using our API
Collabs are one of the tools Instagram names for crediting everyone involved. If you make a Reel with another creator, you can schedule it with them invited as a collaborator through the Status 200 Uploads API. The REST API is on every plan, the Free plan included (pricing).
1. Check what the account can post right now. The options endpoint asks Instagram how much of the profile's rolling publishing limit is used. A null there is not a zero (API docs).
curl 'https://status200uploads.com/api/v2/accounts/YOUR_PROFILE_ID/options?platforms=instagram' \
-H 'Authorization: Bearer rl_your_api_key'
2. Import the video you filmed. The answer has a file_id. A large file answers 202 with "status": "processing"; poll GET /api/v2/media?file_id=... until it's ready (API docs).
curl -X POST 'https://status200uploads.com/api/v2/media' \
-H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
-H 'Authorization: Bearer rl_your_api_key' \
-d '{"url": "https://example.com/our-collab-reel.mp4"}'
3. Check the post without sending it, then schedule it. Add "dryRun": true next to post to run every check with nothing sent. Then send the same request without it. The Idempotency-Key makes a retry after a timeout safe: for 24 hours you get the first answer back, and nothing is posted twice (API docs).
curl -X POST 'https://status200uploads.com/api/v2/posts' \
-H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
-H 'Authorization: Bearer rl_your_api_key' \
-H 'Idempotency-Key: collab-reel-2026-10-23-instagram' \
-d '{
"post": {
"accountId": "@myprofile",
"platform": "instagram",
"scheduledFor": "2026-10-23T18:00:00+02:00",
"content": {
"text": "We tested 3 hooks on the same clip. Here is what changed.",
"mediaID": ["YOUR_FILE_ID"]
},
"instagram": {
"postType": "reel",
"shareToFeed": true,
"collaborators": ["partner_username"]
}
}
}'
What the API checks for you:
scheduledForneeds a time zone (+02:00orZ). A time without one is refused with400 scheduled_for_invalid(API docs).- A Reel sent through Instagram's API can be up to 15 minutes and 300 MB (API docs).
Prefer to ask an AI app? On paid plans from Beginner, Claude, Cursor and other MCP apps can sign in to our hosted MCP server. They get status200_validate_post to check a post and status200_schedule_post to queue it, with the same Instagram options, including collaborators (API docs). For more ways to automate Instagram without breaking its rules, see our guide to Instagram automation.
The API won't judge originality for you. Run every post through Instagram's test first: take your contribution out and see what's left.
FAQ
Does Instagram reduce reach for reposts? Accounts that mostly re-upload other people's photos, carousels or Reels without material edits are no longer recommended to non-followers. Using the built-in Repost button or sharing to your Story is what Instagram recommends instead.
Is cross-posting my own TikTok videos to Instagram unoriginal? Instagram defines original content as including photos or videos you took. Its unoriginal examples are content you had no role in creating or didn't produce or film.
Does crediting the original creator make a repost original? No. Instagram says a credit in the caption, a border, a watermark or subtitles alone don't qualify. A screenshot of someone else's work stays unoriginal even with credit.
Will my followers still see my posts if I'm not eligible? Yes. Instagram says the originality rules do not affect how it shows content to people who already follow you.
How do I get my account recommended again? Check Account Status in your settings, remove the flagged posts or appeal, and post originals. You become eligible again when most of your posts from a rolling 30-day period are original.
