How to Share Instagram Posts to Threads (2026)

The Also share on toggle, automatic sharing, Meta Business Suite, and when a separate Threads post is the better choice (Gems, 500 characters).

How to Share Instagram Posts to Threads (2026)

Short answer: Yes, you can cross-post from Instagram to Threads. In the Instagram app on iPhone or Android, tap Also share on... before you share a photo or video post, then turn on your Threads account. Pick Share this post for this one post, or Always share posts to share every future post too. Instagram says the feature isn't available on computers. Your Threads profile has to be linked to your Instagram account. Meta Business Suite on desktop can also cross-post an Instagram post to Threads. The catch: a crossposted post can't get a Threads Gem, so for posts you want to stand out on Threads, write a separate Threads version.

Key Takeaways

Point Details
Where it works The Instagram app on Android and iPhone, not on computers
One post or all "Share this post" for one, "Always share posts" for this and future posts
Requirement Your Threads profile must be associated with your Instagram account
Automatic sharing Set in Accounts Center; your Threads account needs the same username as your Instagram account
Meta Business Suite Desktop only for Threads; the Threads profile must be in your business portfolio
The catch A post crossposted from Instagram can't get a Threads Gem
Deleting Deleting the Instagram post doesn't delete the Threads copy

How to share one Instagram post to Threads

These steps are from Instagram's help page Share your Instagram posts to Threads, which notes: "This feature is only available to people using the Instagram app on an Android or iPhone."

  1. On Instagram, start by uploading or taking a photo or video.
  2. Before sharing your post, tap Also share on...
  3. Tap the toggle next to your Threads account's name, then choose:
    • Share this post: "Only your current post will be shared to Threads and future posts will not automatically be shared to Threads."
    • Always share posts: "This post and your future posts will automatically be shared to Threads."
  4. Tap Back in the top left, then tap Share.

Instagram adds a warning: "You may receive a message if the post can't be shared to Threads." The page doesn't list the reasons. The one requirement it names is the link between your accounts: "Your Threads profile must be associated with your Instagram account in order to share your Instagram posts to Threads."

How to share every Instagram post to Threads automatically

There are two places to switch it on or off:

  • When you post: pick Always share posts in the steps above. Before sharing, you can also turn automatic sharing of future posts on or off under More options.
  • In Accounts Center: Meta's page Manage connected experiences says: "In Accounts Center, tap or click Connected experiences, then tap or click Sharing across profiles." Pick the profile you share from and the one you share to, then use the toggle under Automatically share.

One condition is easy to miss. Meta says: "To share your Facebook or Instagram posts to Threads, your Threads account will need to have the same username as your Instagram account."

Can you share an Instagram post to Threads after posting it?

Instagram's help page only describes the option before you share ("Before sharing your post, tap Also share on..."). We found no Instagram help page that explains how to send a post that is already published to Threads as a Threads post. If you missed the toggle, the documented option is a new post on Threads.

Cross-posting from Meta Business Suite

If you plan posts on a computer, Meta's page About cross-posting to Facebook, Instagram and Threads in Meta Business Suite lists where each type of content can go:

You create It can also go to
Instagram post Facebook Feed, Instagram Stories, Facebook Groups, Threads
Instagram reel Instagram Stories, Facebook Reels, Facebook Groups
Facebook post Facebook Stories, Instagram Feed, Facebook Groups, Threads

Two conditions apply. "If you want to cross-post to Threads, your Threads profile must also be added to your portfolio." And: "Cross-posting to Threads and cross-posting a Facebook post or reel to Facebook Stories are only available on Meta Business Suite desktop." Threads is not on the list for an Instagram reel.

What happens on Threads

From Instagram's help page:

  • "Instagram posts you share to Threads will appear as a post in your Threads feed and profile."
  • Who sees it depends on your Threads profile privacy setting.
  • If you've turned on sharing to the fediverse, these shared posts "will not be shared with users on other servers in the fediverse."
  • Deleting is separate: "if you decide to delete a post on Instagram that you've shared to Threads, you will need to visit your Threads profile to delete the post on Threads."

Should you cross-post, or write a Threads version?

Cross-posting saves a step, but it has two costs.

No Gems. Threads' help page About Gems on Threads says a post "can't be a repost or crossposted from another app. For example, if you create a post on Instagram and crosspost it to Threads, it can't get a Gem." Gems are only for posts and replies from people in the US for now. Our Threads Gems guide covers what they reward.

Different limits. An Instagram caption and a Threads post aren't the same length. Here is what each network takes when you post through Status 200 Uploads (Instagram, Threads):

Instagram Threads
Text Caption up to 2,200 characters Up to 500 characters
Post types A Reel, a feed photo, or a carousel of 2 to 10 files Text alone, text with one image or one video, or a carousel of 2 to 20 files
Largest image 8 MB (feed photo) 8 MB
Largest video 300 MB 1 GB
Video length Up to 15 minutes (Reels) Up to 5 minutes

So a long Instagram caption needs a shorter Threads version. Threads also takes text on its own, while every Instagram post type needs a photo or video.

Example: post both versions with one image

If you'd rather write each version yourself, schedule two posts with the same image: one request per network. Our API documentation says: "Publish the same content to several networks: import the media once, then send one request per network." One post to each of several networks "can be sent back to back".

The Instagram feed photo, with the long caption:

curl -X POST 'https://status200uploads.com/api/v2/posts' \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -H 'Authorization: Bearer rl_your_api_key' \
  -H 'Idempotency-Key: launch-photo-instagram' \
  -d '{
    "post": {
      "accountId": "@yourprofile",
      "platform": "instagram",
      "scheduledFor": "2026-11-03T18:00:00+01:00",
      "content": {
        "text": "Our new studio is open. Here is what changed, what it cost, and what we would do differently (full story in the caption)...",
        "mediaUrls": ["https://example.com/photos/studio.jpg"]
      }
    }
  }'

The Threads version, short and with a question:

curl -X POST 'https://status200uploads.com/api/v2/posts' \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -H 'Authorization: Bearer rl_your_api_key' \
  -H 'Idempotency-Key: launch-photo-threads' \
  -d '{
    "post": {
      "accountId": "@yourprofile",
      "platform": "threads",
      "scheduledFor": "2026-11-03T18:00:00+01:00",
      "content": {
        "text": "The new studio is open. One thing we would do differently: start with the lighting. What would you change first?",
        "mediaUrls": ["https://example.com/photos/studio.jpg"]
      }
    }
  }'

One image and no post type makes the Instagram post a feed photo: "Send one image and no post type, and it goes out as a feed photo with your caption." With the Idempotency-Key header, if a request is sent again with the same key and body, "nothing is posted or imported a second time". Keep the image online until the posts go out: a scheduled post "fetches the file when it goes out, and we keep no copy". Threads is on every plan, Free included.
