Instagram Features: 90-Minute Videos, Explained (2026)

Instagram is testing 90-minute horizontal videos called Features. Who has them, what Clips as Reels does, and what changes for scheduled Reels.

Instagram Features: 90-Minute Videos, Explained (2026)

Short answer: On 26 October 2026, Instagram started testing Features, horizontal videos of up to 90 minutes, with select creators in the US, after earlier tests in Brazil. Alongside it, Clips as Reels lets a creator link up to eight Reels back to the longer video, and Series groups episodic Reels around one topic. It is a limited test, not a rollout to everyone. Nothing changes yet for Reels you schedule from an app: through Status 200 Uploads, a Reel is still up to 15 minutes and 300 MB, Instagram's own limit for Reels published from an app.

Key Takeaways

Point Details
What Features are Horizontal videos of up to 90 minutes, for podcasts, vlogs and interviews
Who has them Select creators in the US from 26 October 2026, after tests in Brazil
Clips as Reels Link up to eight Reels clips back to a longer video
Series Tag Reels into a set on one topic for episodic viewing
Money No YouTube-style ad revenue sharing announced for Features
Scheduling Through us, Reels stay up to 15 minutes and 300 MB; Features aren't a post type we publish

What Instagram announced

Instagram head Adam Mosseri and VP of product Tessa Lyons presented the changes in a video on 26 October. Social Media Today, working from Instagram's press release, lists four parts:

Change What it does Status
Features "videos of up to 90 minutes, enabling expanded storytelling in the app" Tested in Brazil; rolling out to select US creators from 26 October, "with plans to expand in the coming months"
Clips as Reels Creators can "link up to eight Reels clips back to a longer video post" Tested in Brazil earlier this year; expanding to select US creators
Series Creators can "tag Reels within a dedicated topic set" Tested since June; "working on an expanded global rollout"
TV remote Phones will work as remote controls for Instagram's TV app Announced as coming "soon"

The Verge describes it as "a big push into longform horizontal video", and quotes Instagram spokesperson Megan Buckley: Features are expanding to the US "in a small test". TechRepublic adds that "Features will appear in users' feeds and on the Explore page."

Features vs Reels at a glance

Features (test) Reels
Length Up to 90 minutes, horizontal Up to 15 minutes when published from an app
Who can post Select creators in the US, after tests in Brazil Any Business or Creator account through us
How to post In the Instagram app, if you're in the test In the app, or scheduled from Status 200 Uploads
Size through us Not a post type we publish Up to 300 MB per video

The two are meant to work together. Instagram's pitch, as The Verge reports it, is that shortform and longform video become "symbiotic", the way a podcast or a comedy special can be a long video and a set of clips at once. Clips as Reels is the piece that connects them: the short clips do the discovery, and the long video is where viewers end up.

Isn't this IGTV again?

Instagram has tried long video before. TechRepublic notes that IGTV was "a separate app launched in 2018 and discontinued in 2022". The difference this time: "Features places longer videos within Instagram's main app", and the Reels you already post can send viewers to the full video.

What's still unknown

  • Who gets it next. It's a small test. TechRepublic: "access remains limited during testing".
  • Money. "Instagram has not announced a YouTube-style advertising revenue-sharing program for Features."
  • Apps and the API. The coverage we read describes Features in the Instagram app. We found nothing about publishing a Feature through Instagram's API, so we assume it isn't possible yet.

What changes if you schedule Instagram posts

Today, Status 200 Uploads publishes three kinds of Instagram post: "A Reel (one video), a feed post with one photo, or a carousel of 2 to 10 files." A Reel can be "Up to 15 minutes, Instagram's own limit for Reels published from an app", and the largest video is 300 MB. A Feature isn't one of those post types, so a 90-minute upload has to go through the Instagram app, if you are in the test.

What you can do now is get the short side ready. If you clip a podcast or a long video, schedule the clips as Reels through us, and keep each one within the Instagram limits. If you get Features later, those same Reels are the ones you would link back to the long video in the app. For vertical clips, our video sizes cheat sheet has the specs for every network, and file limits lists what we accept per network.

Example: schedule a Reel clip through the API

One request schedules a Reel with a cover image. post.instagram.postType is reel, and coverUrl is the web address of the cover, of which our docs say "Instagram fetches it when the Reel goes out, so it must still be there then":

curl -X POST 'https://status200uploads.com/api/v2/posts' \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -H 'Authorization: Bearer rl_your_api_key' \
  -d '{
    "post": {
      "accountId": "@yourprofile",
      "platform": "instagram",
      "scheduledFor": "2026-11-03T18:00:00+01:00",
      "content": {
        "text": "Clip 1 of this week's episode",
        "mediaUrls": ["https://example.com/clips/episode-12-clip-1.mp4"]
      },
      "instagram": {
        "postType": "reel",
        "shareToFeed": true,
        "coverUrl": "https://example.com/clips/episode-12-clip-1-cover.jpg"
      }
    }
  }'

A scheduled post "is answered at once with 202 scheduled: nothing is sent until its time". Keep the video and cover online until then: the media of a scheduled post and a Reel's cover "are fetched when it goes out". A video over 300 MB is refused before anything is sent. The full field list is in our API documentation.
