X API Pricing 2026: Why Posting to X Costs Extra

X bills its API per call: $0.015 a post, $0.20 with a link. What that means for schedulers, DIY bots and what posting to X costs you.

X API Pricing 2026: Why Posting to X Costs Extra

Short answer: The X API is pay-per-use. You buy credits and X deducts them per request, with "no subscriptions" and no minimum spend (X API pricing). Creating a post costs $0.015, and a post that contains a URL costs $0.20. A scheduler that posts to X through the pay-per-use API pays these rates on every post it sends for you. At Status 200 Uploads, X is a $9 a month add-on that works on any plan, Free included. It covers 200 posts to X per billing month, up to 20 of them with a link (pricing).

Key Takeaways

How X API pricing works in 2026

X's pricing page says the API "uses pay-per-usage pricing. No subscriptions—pay only for what you use." You "purchase credits upfront in the Developer Console" and "credits are deducted as you make API requests" (X API pricing).

The X changelog dates the change: "Today, we officially launched X API Pay-Per-Use pricing" (6 Feb 2026). At that launch X said "Basic and Pro plans remain available, and existing subscribers can opt in to Pay-Per-Use" (X changelog). The current pricing page lists only pay-per-use rates, and points high-volume users to an Enterprise plan.

Reads are charged "per resource returned in the response", and writes "per request". The prices most relevant to posting:

Action X's unit cost
Post: Create $0.015 per request
Post: Create (with URL) $0.200 per request
Post: Create (summoned) $0.010 per request
Media Metadata $0.005 per request
Posts: Read $0.005 per resource
Owned Reads (your own posts, followers, mentions and more) $0.001 per resource

Source: X API pricing. X adds that "prices are subject to change" and that current rates are always in the Developer Console.

Two more rules from the same page matter for budgeting:

  • Deduplication. "All resources are deduplicated within a 24-hour UTC day window", so reading the same post twice in a day is charged once. X calls this "a soft guarantee".
  • Caps and limits. Pay-per-use is "capped at 3 million Post reads per monthly billing cycle". You can set a spending limit, and "when the limit is reached, API requests will be blocked until the next billing cycle".

Why a post with a link costs more

The April update set today's write prices: "POST /2/tweets is now $0.015 per post, and Posts containing a URL are $0.20 per Post (summoned replies remain $0.01)." It took effect on 20 April 2026 (X changelog). X hasn't given a reason for the link price on its pricing page or in that changelog entry, so we won't guess one.

In practice, a link post costs more than 13 times as much as a plain post ($0.20 against $0.015). Here's what that means for a small DIY setup at X's list prices:

Posts in a month through your own X app Cost at X's list prices
60 plain posts 60 × $0.015 = $0.90
60 posts, all with a link 60 × $0.20 = $12.00
50 plain + 10 with a link $0.75 + $2.00 = $2.75

That's our arithmetic from X's published rates. It doesn't include reads, media or any change X makes to its prices.

What else changed for automated posting on X

The changelog also lists rule changes that affect tools posting on your behalf:

  • Replies need to be summoned. Since 20 March 2026, "programmatic replies via POST /2/tweets are now only permitted when the original Post's author has 'summoned' the replier (by @mentioning that account or quoting one of its Posts)." This applies to self-serve tiers. Enterprise access isn't affected (X changelog).
  • No follows, likes or quote posts. With the April update, "Following, Likes, and Quote-Posts via the API have been removed from all self-serve tiers."

So a scheduler can post for you, but auto-replying to strangers, auto-liking and auto-following are off the table on self-serve access.

Is there a free tier for the X API in 2026?

The current pricing page doesn't list a free plan. When pay-per-use launched, X said "Public Utility Apps continue to receive free scaled access" and "recently active Legacy Free tier users receive a one-time $10 voucher" (X changelog).

New paying accounts can get one-time free credits: "$20 in free credits after an account with its first eligible card completes its first purchase of API credits", and a match of the first auto-recharge "up to $50". These credits "expire 3 months after they are granted", and X says the incentives "are currently rolling out" (X free credit incentives).

Why posting to X costs extra in schedulers

On pay-per-use, every post a scheduler sends through the X API is a billed request, and a link post is billed at $0.20. So the cost grows with every post you send to X.

At Status 200 Uploads it works like this (pricing):

X add-on Details
Price $9 a month, billed monthly through Whop
Plans Works with every plan, Free included
Allowance 200 posts to X per billing month, up to 20 of them with a link
Your plan's allowance X posts don't use your plan's post allowance

The separate link cap mirrors how X prices links: through the API, a post with a URL costs $0.20 against $0.015 for a plain one. The other networks are on every plan, except Skool, which needs the Beginner plan or higher (API docs).

Example: check an X post with a link before you send it

Our API runs the same checks a real publish would when you add "dryRun": true next to post. "Every check a publish makes is run and nothing is sent", and a check isn't counted in your API key's request count (API docs).

curl -X POST 'https://status200uploads.com/api/v2/posts' \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -H 'Authorization: Bearer rl_your_api_key' \
  -d '{
    "dryRun": true,
    "post": {
      "accountId": "@myprofile",
      "platform": "x",
      "content": {
        "text": "New guide: what the X API costs in 2026 https://status200uploads.com/blog/why-x-costs-extra-schedulers"
      }
    }
  }'

The answer is 200 with dry_run: true, an outcome (publish, queue, schedule or refuse), would_publish, a reason when it wouldn't be sent now, and warnings. The reason carries the code a real send would get. For X, the API docs list these:

Code When
403 plan_required X needs the X add-on (error.required says x_addon, error.upgrade_url links to the page that sells it)
429 x_limit_reached The add-on's 200 posts this billing month are used
429 x_link_limit_reached The 20 link posts are used; the error includes error.link_used, error.link_limit and error.detected_links
x_rejected X refused the post, for example because the text duplicates an earlier post

For both limit codes, the docs say: "do not resend before resets_at (for a link post you can remove the link)" (API docs). So if your link quota is spent, the fix is to post without the URL, or wait for resets_at.

To send it for real, drop dryRun, and add an Idempotency-Key header so a retry after a timeout never posts twice: the docs say you get the first answer back for 24 hours and "nothing is posted or imported a second time". If you build this in n8n, see our n8n auto-posting guide.

With an AI app (MCP). On paid plans from Beginner, Claude, Cursor and other MCP apps can use our hosted connector (more on MCP publishing). status200_validate_post runs every check and sends nothing. status200_get_usage reports your plan's remaining posts, and its description notes that "posts to X are metered by the X add-on instead and are not counted here."
